Start your tour of the Roman Catacombs. Dating all the way back to the 2nd century AD, this extensive network of tunnels snaking beneath the city was once both a burial ground and a hiding place for the first Christians in Rome.

Begin from the top layer (a 14th-century Basilica), down through a huge 4th-century Basilica, a 2nd-century sanctuary that is believed to have once hosted rituals by the mysterious Mithraic cult and finally, an incredibly preserved 1st-century Roman street, replete with herringbone tiling.
