Description

Create your very own souvenir of Kyoto by joining in and learning the art of Kyo-Yuzen. This local dyeing technique creates bright, fantastic designs great for all ages. Join the craftspeople of Marumasu-Nishimuraya, a 100 year-old business, and dye your very own item with step-by-step instructions. The traditional art of Surikomi Yuzen, a brush dye technique was created in the mid-18th century and has been the most popular way to dye kimono cloth ever since! Using paper stencils and ink, layers of color are carefully brushed onto fabric. Designs range from realistic flowers and plants to abstract designs. While a kimono takes days or weeks of work, you can make your own shopping bag, mini tapestry, T-shirt or cute mini tote in just a few hours!
