Shabutsu Buddhist Image Copying at Shourinji Temple in Kyoto
starts from
$21Description
Take home the peacefulness of Kyoto when you practice shabutsu at Shourinji Temple. Tracing the picture of a Buddha is said to help you meditate and bring enlightenment. Shabutsu is the practice of copying Buddhist images by hand, once used to spread the teachings before the printing press. Copying these images is now a form of meditation, to clear the mind and focus on beauty. Trace over the lines within the quiet tatami halls and garden-facing porches of the temple, guided by the monks of Shourinji Temple. The temple was built in 1550, and the Heian-era statue of Bishamonten which graces the altar was originally found hidden in the ceiling of Tofukuji Temple.
