Description

Stop by the workshop of craftsmen who make beautiful Kyoto-style fans, which you can use or display as ornaments. Learn the history of fan making from the artists before trying your hand at making your own fan! Come create your own unique Kyoto souvenir, assisted by traditional craftsmen.

Restrictions

  • Children of all ages can participate in this activity.
  • Listed price is to make 1 fan.
  • Children aged 11 years old and below will be pasting cut pictures on their uchiwa fan.

Additional Notes

  • The workshop is not a sightseeing facility. So we ask you to go to restroom before visiting the workshop to avoid, as far as possible, using the bathroom there.
  • We will guide you through the workshop of craftsmen. Please be respectful of the craftsmen when they show you around the workshop.
  • There are chairs in the workshop
  • You are allowed to take photos.
  • This activity is held primarily in Japanese. The staff can speak simple English.

10:00:00 Meet at Shiomi Uchiwa

Day: Day1
Explanation and Demonstration by Craftsmen
The fan and the handle of Kyouchiwa (Kyoto-style fans) are made separately, and attached afterwards. Around 100 thin bamboo sticks are arranged radially by hand, and a handle is attached to complete the fan.

Uchiwa Making Experience
Choose your desired design and attach pieces of hand-made Japanese paper of various colors to the structure of the fan. After this stroke your design with a cutter and wrap the sides with paper tape finalize your own product.
